Info fig. Clara (also Chiara, Clare or Klara) of Assisi, Italy; abbess; † 1253. Feast August 11 (& 12). According to the latest research, she was born in 1195 and came from a noble family in Assisi. She was about eighteen when Francis began his infectious movement there. Following his example, she broke with her home, managed to escape the clutches of her family, married Lady Poverty like Francis, and had him dress her in the monastic habit. Soon other women joined her, including her sister Agnes, whom she had spectacularly helped escape from their parents' home. For forty years she headed the small monastery of San Damiano, just outside Assisi. Meanwhile, a strong and deep spiritual friendship grew between Francis and her. If he was uncertain about a particular decision or did not know how to act, he would ask Sister Clara for advice, also in matters of prayer, penance, spiritual guidance, and apostolate. Francis died in 1226 at the age of 42, deeply mourned by Sister Clara and her fellow sisters. She continued in the spirit of Brother Francis. Around 1240, through the fervent prayer she offered kneeling before a monstrance with the Holy Host inside, she managed to prevent a threatening Saracen invasion of Assisi. From that moment on, she was considered the savior of Assisi and San Damiano. Later legends even tell that on that occasion, with the monstrance in hand, she fearlessly confronted the Saracens, whereupon they immediately took flight. She died at the age of 59.
